Getting Specific about 2012
I love this time of year! I love the possibilities and the potential of the New Year! If the Lord wills, there will be 8,760 hours in 2012. How will you use them? Here are some of my specific goals for this next year:
1. Study one Epistle a Month – In 2011, I read through the Bible in 90 days. That wasn’t near enough time to really sink my teeth in, but it was great for whetting my appetite. This year I plan to read slower and have more time to really go deep in the Word. My wife, Hollee, bought me an ESV Reverse Interlinear Bible for Christmas. I am excited to devote each month to a different New Testament epistle, giving myself the time for some real in-depth study.
2. Read at least 12 nonfiction books in 2012 – Successful people read, period. As the saying goes, “Five years from now you’ll be the same person you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” I know that in order to be a better husband, father, and Christian man I need to read more. That’s why I plan to read a book a month in 2012. How much will you read?
3. Publish another book – The success of my first book, The Treasure Chest of Grace has been truly humbling. I am so thankful for all the support and encouragement that I have received surrounding the book’s release. I just pray that it has given glory to God! Hollee and I have already started working on the next “Radically Christian” book. It will be the first in a line of Children’s books entitled, “First Century Kids.” They will be historical fiction about children living during the First Century. I am so excited to get this first book illustrated and get it printed! I know that it will be a great tool for teaching the next generation about New Testament Christianity!
4. Be an example of self-discipline and self-control – About a year ago, I lost 40 pounds. Unfortunately, since then I’ve gained back about half of those pounds. I recognize the health benefits of eating right and exercising. But more than that, I believe this can be a spiritual issue as well. If I cannot discipline myself to exercise, how can I discipline myself in spiritual areas? And if I lack the self-control it takes to resist chocolate cake, how will have the self-control it takes to resist sin? Therefore, I am committed to being a better example of self-control and self-discipline.
What are your plans for 2012? Think about who you want to be a year from now and make plans to become that person. Be specific and reasonable. But remember, “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time!”
I love you and God loves you,
