Show Yourself a Man
When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, ‘I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn (1 Kings 2:1-3).
Our culture is really confused when it comes to what it means to “be a man.” There are still some who believe that manliness is about physicality. Meaning, they believe being a man is about how strong you are, how athletic you are, how appealing you are to women, how well you dress, etc.
On the opposite extreme, there are those who are doing their best to teach young men that there really should be no distinction between men and women. They teach that masculinity is wrong and boys should seek to be more feminine. Both extremes are wrong!
God made men and women unique and distinct for a reason! I truly believe God created men to be warriors. The battles are not always physical, but they are real. Men, in order to fulfill the purpose for which they were created, must be engaged in battle. Men must have something in which to believe and something for which to fight!
Before David died he gave his son a charge, telling him to be a man! The way he told him to be a man was to “be strong” and do what God commanded him to do! Boys today need to be told to “be strong” and “do what God has told you to do.”
We need to tell them to serve God…even when it’s hard!
We need to tell them to fight against evil!
We need to tell them to stand up for the less fortunate and those who are being hurt!
We need to tell them to be men!
It is unfortunate that our boys are being taught to be more feminine. Instead, they need to be taught what true godly masculinity is all about! Let’s encourage our boys by telling them, “SHOW YOURSELF A MAN!”
