Over the last 16 years in ministry, I have served under the leadership of some wonderful elders. They have done so many things to encourage and shepherd me. Sadly, some preachers get little to no encouragement from the elders under whom they serve. So I thought it might be helpful to share some of the things my elders have done for me over the years, in hopes that other elders would do the same for their preachers.

Why Every Church Needs Elders

Some words make us very nervous. Among the world’s most nerve-racking words are the simple little words, “all” and “every.” Whenever someone dares use such words, objectors are quick to offer possible exceptions, so as to take the edge off these words. So if someone says, “Every church needs elders,” there are bound to be people who object. That’s why I pray you’ll not object too quickly and you’ll let me explain why every church needs elders.

When a congregation starts the process of appointing new elders, the preacher usually preaches a lesson or two about the qualifications of elders. 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 are usually the two texts on which the preacher focuses. But I think we are missing some qualifications that are much more fundamental. Just because a man is not a drunkard and is the husband of one wife, does not make him qualified to serve as a shepherd in the Lord’s church.
